Philippe Halsman photographs, ca. 1964-1969.

This collection contains photographic materials of varying formats, including negatives, transparencies, and prints. Commissioned by the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village (now The Henry Ford) and assisted by employees, these images were taken by Philippe Halsman in the 1960s. They were used for various publications in promoting the attractions at The Henry Ford. The collection is divided into six series, mostly dictated by format. The Administrative and Supplemental Materials series includes internal correspondence, catalog cards, and publications featuring Philippe Halsman photographs. The Slides series features both housed and unhoused color slides. The Copy Negative and Contact Print series features negatives and contact prints complete with development instructions from Halsman and his wife, who acted as his photographic and darkroom assistant. The Transparencies series features 4 x 5 color transparencies. The Negatives series features both color and black and white negatives in various sizes. The Exhibit Prints series features large panel matted prints that were used for both internal and external exhibits of Halsman photographs

Philippe Halsman was born in Riga, Latvia in 1901. He opened a photography studio in Paris in 1931. He left occupied France for the United States in 1940. Halsman was a founding member (1945) and first president of the American Society of Media Photographers, Inc. Halsman is best known for his portraits of famous individuals, such as Salvador Dali, Albert Einstein and Winston Churchill. His thirty year affiliation with Life magazine resulted in 101 covers.
